Rare earth elements are a group of 17 minerals that are essential for modern technology. They are used in electric vehicles, wind turbines, smartphones, defence equipment, and semiconductors. Although these minerals are found in many parts of the world, processing them is complex and costly. Today, China dominates the global rare earth supply chain, especially in refining and magnet production. This creates a risk for countries like India, which depend on imports for advanced manufacturing and clean energy technologies.
To reduce this dependence, India has proposed developing rare earth corridors integrated networks that connect mining, processing, research, and manufacturing. These corridors are expected to be developed in mineral-rich states such as Odisha, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. The aim is to build a complete domestic value chain, from extracting rare earth minerals to producing high-performance magnets used in evs and electronics.
By strengthening its rare earth ecosystem, India can secure supplies for strategic sectors like defence, renewable energy, and electronics manufacturing. This move supports technological independence, attracts investment, and positions India as a reliable global partner in critical minerals. In the long run, the rare earth corridor is not just about mining it is about protecting India’s future in advanced technology.
