Viksit Bharat 2047: Measuring Success via the New CPI Inflation Series

Viksit Bharat 2047 is India’s vision to become a fully developed nation by the year 2047, when the country completes 100 years of independence. A developed country is not only one with high income, but also one where people enjoy a good quality of life, stable prices, better jobs, and economic security. To check whether India is moving in the right direction, economists use indicators like economic growth, employment, poverty levels, and inflation. Among these, inflation is very important because it directly affects the cost of living of ordinary people.

Inflation in India is mainly measured using the Consumer Price Index (CPI). CPI shows how the prices of daily-use items. When CPI inflation is high, people can buy fewer goods with the same income, reducing their standard of living. Therefore, keeping inflation low and stable is necessary for inclusive growth, which is a key goal of Viksit Bharat 2047.

Recently, India introduced a new CPI inflation series with base year 2024 = 100, replacing the earlier 2012 base year, so that inflation measurement reflects present-day consumption patterns. People today spend differently compared to earlier years. They spend more on education, healthcare, transport, and digital services. The new CPI series updates the list of goods and services and their importance (weights) based on recent household spending data. Under the new CPI (base 2024), India’s retail inflation in January 2026 was 2.75%. This makes inflation measurement more realistic and relevant for today’s economy.

An important change in the new CPI series is the lower weight given to food items (from about 45–46% earlier to around 36–37%). Earlier, food prices dominated inflation figures, making inflation very volatile. Since households now spend proportionately less on food and more on services, the new CPI provides a more balanced picture of price changes.

In the journey towards Viksit Bharat 2047, the new CPI inflation series plays a crucial role. Accurate inflation data helps the government design better welfare schemes and allows the Reserve Bank of India to take correct decisions on interest rates. If inflation remains low and stable over time, it indicates rising purchasing power, better living standards, and stronger economic stability.
