Indian Knowledge system

Background-img

The Research Institute for Indian Knowledge Systems envisions an academic community, in which the timeless wisdom and knowledge embedded in the diverse Indian epistemological traditions, are deeply understood, appreciated, and applied to address the demands and challenges of modern-day university education. We aspire to be a leading research centre, dedicated to the study, preservation, and dissemination of Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) in all their depth and richness. By fostering interdisciplinary research in IKS and knowledge generation, our vision is to revitalise and apply relevant epistemes of IKS to the modern disciplines taught in educational institutes. Through rigorous scholarship, interdisciplinary collaborations, and academic outreach, our institute seeks to enlighten minds, inspire curiosity, and contribute to the strengthening of IKS in contemporary university education.

The mission of the institute is to sensitise the academic community towards the relevance of IKS, empower it with rigorous research, and encourage faculty to integrate IKS components in curricula. Our mission is anchored in the following core values:

  • bullet icon Academic Excellence and Rigorous Research: Through cutting-edge research, interdisciplinary investigations and the collaboration of esteemed scholars, the Centre aims to delve into the profound insights contained in ancient scriptures, philosophical treatises, traditional arts, sciences, and other repositories of Indian wisdom. Our research endeavours prioritise critical analysis, methodological rigour, and culturally responsive scholarship to contribute meaningfully. Our research will be grounded in academic integrity, critical analysis, and a commitment to preserving and presenting authentic knowledge. The Centre aspires to the highest standards of scholarship, focusing on both textual analysis and practical applications, while fostering an environment of intellectual curiosity and critical thinking.
  • bullet icon Knowledge Dissemination and Education: Through innovative educational programmes, workshops, seminars, and publications, we aim to share the profound insights of IKS, nurturing intellectual curiosity and promoting positive societal transformations. We seek to provide a nurturing environment for students and scholars to engage in IKS-related academic pursuits, encourage critical thinking and creativity. Through innovative teaching methodologies and accessible resources, we aim to disseminate IKS to both - the local student community as well as the global academic audience.
  • bullet icon Integration of Traditional Knowledge with Contemporary Education: We recognise that knowledge generation through research in IKS can supplement several disciplines such as sociology, anthropology, linguistics, metallurgy and so on. We endeavour to bridge the gap between traditional knowledge and modern sciences and theories.
  • bullet icon Promoting Interdisciplinary Research: We will encourage interdisciplinary research within the Institute and foster collaborations with other academic departments, enabling holistic approaches to understanding the multifaceted nature of IKS texts.
  • bullet icon Cultural Identity and Self-Respect: Emphasising and reviving IKS in academia and university education, can instil a sense of cultural identity and self-respect among students and scholars. It helps reconnect with India's historical roots and ancient scientific developments, fostering a deeper appreciation for indigenous knowledge and its contribution to global thought.
  • bullet icon Engaging with Traditional Practitioners: Recognising the invaluable expertise of traditional practitioners, we will establish dialogue and partnerships with various traditional communities, gurus, and experts who have learnt through both academics and the various paddhati (Methodology). Through mutual learning, we will document and preserve traditional practices, and integrate them with contemporary knowledge systems.
