A research institute in Life Sciences will have state-of-art research facilities supported by experienced research faculty in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Zoology, Botany, Environment Sciences, Geology, Geography, Analytical and Organic Chemistry etc. The institute will perform research activities and also run UGC approved UG, PG and Doctoral programmes benefitting 1000+ students every year and 100+ staff. The present facilities in existing DES institutes are not sufficient and hence a new building with augmented research facilities is being planned. We strongly believe that aspiring students can fulfil their career aspirations in industry, research, education and/or government jobs and contribute to providing solutions to global issues such as climate change, conservation of biodiversity, water, environment etc.
As a small step towards this, DES PU has already established an Advanced Research Centre of Ecology and Conservation on its campus. But considering the infrastructure requirements to run programmes in this domain area, DES PU will need a separate building admeasuring more than 4500 sq.mtr. area and accommodating UG, PG and Research laboratories of programmes like Environmental Sciences, Biotechnology, Biology etc.
This building will be constructed on the DES PU campus and will serve as a knowledge generation facility not only for DES PU stakeholders, but also for other organizations.
DES PU has established a Research Centre in Life Sciences.
The Research Centre in Life Sciences at DES Pune University (DES PU) is envisioned as a dynamic hub for interdisciplinary collaboration, fostering cutting-edge research in biochemistry, biotechnology, ecology, and environmental sciences. This holistic approach aims to foster a comprehensive understanding of life at various scales – from molecular interactions to dynamic ecosystems – and promote sustainable practices, advancement of knowledge and contribute meaningfully to global scientific discourse.
With this aim, the Advance Research Centre (ARC) for Ecology and Conservation has been set up in the premises of DES PU in collaboration with its sister institute Deccan Education Society’s Fergusson College. The purpose is to establish a scientific, technical and highly credible ‘Advance Research Centre for Ecology & Conservation’ which will play a vital role in providing scientific inputs to the existing policy framework (both national and multi-lateral environmental agreements) in subjects like Biodiversity; Marine landscape; Climate Change; Wildlife biology; Landscape Ecology; Community Conservation; Ecosystem Services; Sustainable Development and other related areas.
Biodiversity: Studying the richness and variability of life forms across ecosystems, understanding patterns of distribution, evolution, and conservation strategies to preserve Earth's biological heritage.
Ecology: Investigating the interactions and studying ecosystems dynamics, biodiversity patterns, and the impact of human activities on natural habitats.
Environmental Research: Addressing pressing environmental challenges such as pollution, climate change, habitat destruction, and resource depletion through interdisciplinary research and sustainable solutions.
Biochemistry Research: Exploring the molecular mechanisms underlying biological processes and diseases, with a focus on medical and health-related research, working to develop treatments and therapies for diseases, improve public health, and enhance healthcare delivery.
Biotechnology Innovation: Harnessing the power of biological systems for applications in medicine, agriculture, industry, and environmental remediation through genetic engineering, biomaterials, and bioprocessing.
